Conjunction Joining word গুলোকেই আমরা সাধারনত conjunction বলে থাকি। অর্থাৎ যে word গুলো কোন উক্তি, শব্দ বা কোন অসম্পুর্ণ বাক্যকে সম্পূর্ণ কিংবা দুটি সম্পূর্ণ বাক্যের মাঝে বসে, বাক্য দুটিকে সংযুক্ত করে, তাদের conjunction বলে। Single conjunction গুলো এমন হতে পারে- And, but, nor, or, because, although, since ইত্যাদি। Examples --- *.কিছু common conjunction এর ব্যবহার উদাহরনসহঃ *.And HasanandZamilare good friends. *.but He is a good studentbutnot a good teacher. *.Because Becauseof the traffic jam, he was late in the exam. *.Although The question was difficult,althoughnot as difficult as we had expected. *.Since Sincewe know Mr. Hasan, he’s a man of word. *.কিছু pair এ থাকা শব্দ যেগুলো প্রায় সময়ই ব্যবহার করে থাকি তা একবার শিখে নিতে পারি- Not only/ but also Either/or Neither/nor Whether/or Both/ and *.Some commonly used Examples— EitherSalmanorShamim will have to bear the risk. The Determiners বাক্যে countable noun ব্যবহার হলেই তার সামনে একটা শব্দ বসে যে শব্দটা ঐ nounএর সংখ্যা নির্দেশ করে। nounটা singular হলে সাধারণতঃ বসে a, an অথবা the। একথাটামনেরাখাজরুরিযেcountable nounথাকলেইসংখ্যাবাচকশব্দথাকবে,কারণ এটার উপর ভিত্তি করে ভর্তি পরীক্ষায় অনেক প্রশ্ন আসে। এই প্রশ্নটা দেখুনঃ I will return to you ________. (DU D-Unit 2010-11) *.Within quarter of hour *.Within the quarter of hour *.Within a quarter of an hour *.Within quarter of the hour এই প্রশ্নের উত্তর হল c। আবার uncountable noun হলেও সেটার সামনে পরিমাণ (কম, বেশি) বোঝাতে শব্দ বসতে পারে । এসব শব্দ মিলেই determiners । এ শব্দগুলো মূলতঃ একধরণের adjective । THE The শব্দটি determinerগুলোর মধ্যে সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ। এই শব্দটি proper nounএর সাথেও যুক্ত হয়। এ সংক্রান্ত কিছু নিয়ম নিচে দেয়া হলঃ সাগর, নদী, পাহাড়ের নামঃ The Pacific, The Ganges, The Himalayas ব্যতিক্রম: লেকের নামঃ Kaptai Lake স্কুল,কলেজ,বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় যখন of দিয়ে হয়ঃ The University of Dhaka ব্যতিক্রম: যখন নিজস্ব নাম দিয়ে শুরু হয়ঃ Northsouth University দেশের নামের ক্ষেত্রে শুধু যেগুলো united দিয়ে শুরু বা republic আছে সেগুলোর আগে the বসবে। The United States of America, the Czech Republic. আবার the democratic republic of Bangladesh ঠিক কিন্তু the Bangladesh ভুল। AএবংAN একটা বাক্যে প্রথমবারের মত কিছু বা কাউকে উল্লেখ করা হলে (noun) তার আগে aঅথবা an বসে। দু'টো শব্দেরই অর্থ একটি (one)। অ, আ, অ্যা, ই, এ, ও – এগুলো ধ্বনি দিযে য়েসব শব্দ শুরু হয তাদের আগে an বসে। An orphan (অরফান) An umbrella (আমব্রেলা) An hour (আওযার) An apple (অ্যাপল) An insult (ইনসাল্ট) An ape (এপ) An oar (ওর) লক্ষ্যণীয় যে H দিয়ে শুরু কিছু শব্দে H উচ্চারিত হয়না। যেমন: hour, heir, herbal, honour, honest এগুলোর আগেও an বসবে। সকল consonant এবং 'ইউ' এবং 'ওয়া' ধ্বনি দিযে যেসব শব্দ শুরু তাদের আগে a বসে। A house A boy A chicken 'ইউ' ধ্বনি দিযে শুরু শব্দ: European, eulogy, euphemism, eucalyptus, ewe, uniform, university, universal, union, unicorn, useful + noun 'ওয়া' ধ্বনি দিযে শুরু শব্দ: One (শব্দটা নিজে noun না হলেও countable nounএর অংশ হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হতে পারে, যেমন: one-taka note) OTHER এশব্দটিবিভিন্নরূপেঅনেকটাtheএবংaএরমতব্যবহৃতহয়। SOME, ANY কিছু, কয়েকজন, কয়েকটা - এরকম বোঝাতে countable noun -এর আগে এই দু'টি শব্দ ব্যবহার হয়। Some ব্যবহার হয় হ্যাঁ-বাচক অর্থে আর না-বাচক এবং প্রশ্নবাচক অর্থে Any ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমনঃ - Do you haveanyeggs? Ans: Yes, I havesomeeggs in the fridge. / No, I don't haveanyeggs. MUCH, MANY, A LOT OF, PLENTY চারটা শব্দের অর্থই অনেক। এদের মধ্যে much uncountable noun এর সামনে বসে। The jug does not havemuchwater. Manyflowers have bloomed. A lot ofboys are wearing these pants now-a-days. I haveplentyof shirts. FEW, A FEW, LITLE, A LITTLE এই চারটা শব্দের অর্থ হল অল্প, সামান্য । few এবং a few বসে countable noun এর সামনে আর little এবং a little বসে uncountable noun এর সামনে। Fewmen are capable of going through this pain. Subject verb agreement বাক্যে subject যদি 3rdperson হয় তাহলে verb-এরসাথে s বা es যোগ করতে হয়। এটাই হল subject verb agreement-এর মুল নিয়ম। কিন্তু পরীক্ষায় subject এবং verb এমন ভাবে দেয়া থাকে যে বুঝতে খুব অসুবিধা হয়। যেমন: His grasp of many areas of radio and television technology makes/make it easy for him to find a job. এই বাক্যে verb খুব সহজে বোঝা গেলেও subject বের করতে বেশ সমস্যা হয়। এই বাক্যে subject হল his grasp একটি singular subject তাই verb হবে makes. এখানে subject এবং verbএর মধ্যে একটি prepositional phrase (of many areas in radio and television technology) আছে তাই subject বুঝতে সমস্যা হয়। নিচে subject verb agreement-এর কিছু নিয়ম দেয়া হল। 1.Subject এবং verb এর মাঝে prepositional phrase আসলে তা verb-এর ওপর কোন প্রভাব ফেলে না। Prepositional phrase সাধারণত একটি preposition দিয়ে সুরু হয় এবং একটি noun দিয়ে শেষ হয়। ওপরের বাক্যে at=preposition এবং technology= noun. 1.Either….or, neither….nor, not only….but also ইত্যাদি থাকলে সবচে কাছের subject অনুযায়ী verb হবে। যেমন: neither john nor his brothers have done this. এখানে verb have হয়েছে কারণ সবচে কাছের subject-টি (his brothers) plural. 2.Collective noun-এর (army, jury, and committee) পর সাধারণত verb-এর main form বসে। যেমন: the jury agrees on the verdict. তবে যদি সবাই কোন কাজ একসাথে না করে আলাদা আলাদা ভাবে করে তাহলে verb-এর সাথে s বা es যোগ করতে হবে না। যেমন: the jury disagree on the verdict. এখানে disagree করার কারণে দলটি দুই ভাগে ভাগ হয়ে গিয়েছে। তাই এখানে verb-এর সাথে s বা es যোগ হয় নি। 1.–ics দিয়ে শেষ হয় এমন শব্দ গুলো যদি কোন বিষয় এর নাম বোঝায় তাহলে তার পর verb এর singular form হয়। যেমন: economics is my favorite subject. 1.The number-এর পর singular verb হয় এবং a number-এর পর plural verb হয়। যেমন: a number of students fail every year. The number of students who pass is increasing. 1.Each, every, somebody, everybody, anybody, nobody এই pronoun-গুলর পর singular verb হয়। যেমন: everybody wants to study in Dhaka university. 1.কখনো কখনোSubject এবং verb-এর মাঝে Along with…., together with……. আসতে পারে। কিন্তু verb subject-এর person অনুযায়ী হবে। যেমন: john along with his friends is going to the cinema. এখানে verb-এর আগে plural noun থাকলেও subject (john) অনুযায়ী singular verb হয়েছে।
